Hey Kurgen. You need to do that thing. Y'know, that thing where you write up how you made your costume, like you used to do on AC Paradise (before the internet ate your login info...). All those progress pictures on your phone? Wouldn't those look great on a blog, accompanied by detailed step-by-step guides and explanations? You could list all the patterns you used, or referenced, along with materials, and tutorials you might have followed, and why you modified something the way that you did. Y'know, all those things. Easy. Bada-bing bada-boom.
That's what my mind would like me to believe, anyway.
It is my intention to share my process(es) of current and past cosplay projects. But I'd like to delve deeper than just that. I'll be getting into the "why" with a lot of things, and what leads me to certain decisions. I hope this will be able to help you on your own cosplay journey. Even if you're working on something entirely different, I hope maybe some of this insight sparks something that gives you an idea you can carry over to your own works.
Or, if you do happen to be tackling the same cosplay beast, I hope my trials and errors help shed some light on how you might or might not want to do something. In cosplay, it often feels like there are 20 different ways to achieve any singular part of a costume.
Fabrics, and agonizing over decisions of colors, types, textures, etc...
Accuracy or lack-thereof in the name of creative liberties
Sewing and crafting techniques and how I came to choose one over another (painting vs. embroidering vs. beading)
Overall vision for a cosplay. How I envision the end fit.
Planning and my processes
Trying new things, like building props
Recommendations of products or supplies, and recommendations based on skill-level, time/effort commitment, and cost (cha-ching... sorry, I had to).
Mistakes and fixes
Wigs ... just, wigs.
My experiences and the epiphanies along the way
And a whole other mess of things.
I'm imagining some posts will be more informal, while others will be more along the lines of a cosplay 'build book'. In any case, I hope you'll stay tuned, and happy cosplay crafting!
